Famous Boats from the Movies
March 6th, 2007There have been many films or television series where cars or even helicopters play fisrt lead. Everybody remembers Knight Rider or Airwolf just to name a few but what about boats in movies. There has never been a movie or TV series that features a boat as the main attraction. Correct me if I’m wrong. This could be related to the sheer difficulty of filming on water. Nevertheless, there are some rather famous movie boats and here is a small collection.
Starting with number 1 is the Bat boat, which is based on a Glastron V-174. The boat was built in the 1960’s and was used in the first Batman film and the TV series that followed. Glastron was chosen to construct the boat from a range of boat manufacturers. Since they started in business in 1956, the company has sold thousands of boats and the Bat boat is just another milestone in Glastron’s history of success.

The boat is powered by a V6 Mercruiser Chevrolet capable of speeds of up to 70mph. The designer of the boat, Richard Hammond has given the boat harpoons, torpedos and all types of gadgets. The vessel has managed to achieve cult status and can even be viewed in a museum. It is currently being exhibited at the “Car Stars museum in Tennessee, U.S.A.
Moving on to another classic movie boat: The Baywatch Scarab. Who would have thought that Baywatch was one of the most popular television series worldwide and was broadcasted in over 100 countries. But the show did not only feature fit babes and hunky fellows; it also featured a beautifully crafted yellow offshore boat. There have been a few enquiries about this boat and it’s not particularly easy to find. Well, you should be able to pick it up from almost every Baywatch episode.

The boat is based on a 34 Scarab und is powered by twin Mercury EFI Outboards. The boat features a sport arch and a handsome young lifeguard by the name of David.
Next in our list is a boat some people may have already forgotten about. The Glastron GT150. The boat was built in 1973 and made its first impression in James Bond’s Live and Let die where it was used in a high speed boat chase as pictured below.

The boat was powered by a 135 hp Evinrude engine for the movie but the standard model came with about 75 horse power. It’s said that Glastron sold over a dozen boats to the producers. Considering they also manufactured the Bat boat, the Bond boat helped Glastron to excel even further in their field. Since its appearance in James Bond, the boat has attracted a wide rage of fans who still seek and restore these boats.
The upcoming movie boat is a high speed runner kids used to watch on TV in the mid 90’s. It goes by the name of Thunder and comes from the TV series Thunder in Paradise. Hulk Hogan played a former Navy Seal in the series, who designed the Thunder boat for the military. It is based on a Scrarab as many other movie boats. Being a military boat it comes with all sort of gadgets such as an anti theft system, inboard computer and stealth mode. Yes, stealth mode. When activated the Thunder would go invisible to radar. It also featured Hydra Thrust, which could excel the baot up to 500 mph.

Last but not least it’s time to leave the past behind and move on to the more modern boats of our time. A perfect example of a contemporary movie boat is the Chris Craft Corsair, which appears in Mission Impossible 3. The designers have given the boat that wooden look typical of Riva boats, which makes it look like a true classic. But it’s not just the design that is impressive. The boat has awesome power and is propelled by a 8.1 liter Volvo Penta engine which generates around 420 horse power. The boat can reach top speeds of up to 70 mph and we can understand why Tom Cruise chose the boat for the movie.

If you feel that we have missed any famous movie boats, please feel free to post your suggestions and we’ll happily add them.
